Day 1Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata

Embark on an unforgettable journey with us as we set out on the first day of our Manu National Park Tour. We will be departing from the historic city of Cusco. We will start our day early, heading towards the quaint town of Paucartambo. 

Paucartambo is a cultural bridge between the Andes and the Amazon. As we drive, we will ascend to the heights where the mystical cloud forest awaits, enveloped in a veil of mist and mystery.

Navigating through the cloud forest, we will witness a realm of transition. Here, the Andean world gives way to the lush expanse of the Manu Peru rainforest. The sights and sounds of the forest will surround us, with the calls of exotic birds piercing the serene silence. Our experienced guides will help us spot an array of wildlife that thrives in this unique ecosystem.

Continuing our descent, we will reach the town of Pilcopata. Here the highlands blend into the beginnings of the Amazon basin. Here, we will feel the climate change as the air becomes warmer and the vegetation more tropical.

Throughout this first day, we will experience:

  • Travel distance of approximately 185 kilometers (115 miles) from Cusco to Pilcopata.
  • Ascent to the highest altitude of 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) as we pass through the Andean grasslands.
  • Descent to the lower altitude of 700 meters (2,297 feet) in the Amazonian foothills near Pilcopata.
  • A moderate level of difficulty, with most of the day spent traveling in our comfortable, all-terrain vehicles.

As we prepare for the next day’s adventures, we will rest overnight in Pilcopata. This town nestles within the vibrant energy of Manu National Park. We will be ready to continue our exploration of one of the world’s most diverse biospheres.

Day 2Pilcopata Lodge – Atalaya – Machuwasi Lake

As dawn breaks on the second day of our Manu National Park Tour from Cusco, we will awaken. The vibrant chorus of the Peruvian Amazon will greet us. After a nourishing breakfast at the Pilcopata Lodge, we will venture deeper into the heart of Manu Peru.

We will make our way to Atalaya, a port on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River. Here, we will embark on a boat that will carry us downriver. The gentle flow of the river offers a unique vantage point. From here, we can observe the Amazon’s teeming wildlife and lush vegetation.

Upon reaching Machuwasi Lake, we will transition to a tranquil balsa raft. Gliding over the calm waters, we will have the opportunity to spot a diverse range of birdlife. Additionally, we may see other species that frequent the lake’s edge. 

This immersive experience allows us to connect with nature and the pulse of the Amazon rainforest.

During this second day of exploration, we will cover:

  • Distance of approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from Pilcopata Lodge to Atalaya by road.
  • A short boat journey downriver to reach Machuwasi Lake, immersing ourselves in the riverine ecosystem.
  • Rafting experience on Machuwasi Lake that allows for an up-close encounter with the local fauna.
  • A day with a low to moderate level of difficulty, with activities accessible to all fitness levels.

After a full day of exploration, we will return to our lodge. As night falls, we will rest amidst the nocturnal sounds of the Amazon, recharging for the final day of our Manu National Park tour.

Day 3Lodge – Parrot Clay Lick – Cusco

On the final day of our Manu National Park tour from Cusco, we will rise with the sun at the Amazon Lodge. We will be ready for a day rich in avian spectacle and scenic beauty. 

We will set off early to visit a nearby parrot clay lick, a natural mineral-rich clay bank. It’s here that we will witness a breathtaking sight. Parrots and macaws will descend in a flurry of color and sound. This experience highlights the vibrant life of National Park Manu Peru.

Following this spectacle, we will begin our journey back towards Cusco. It won’t be without savoring the sights and sounds of the Amazon one last time.   • We will embark on a short trek to the parrot clay lick, an easy walk suitable for most travelers.

  • We will transition from the low altitude of the Amazonian plains, at approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet). Then, we will ascend to the high altitude of Cusco, situated around 3,400 meters (11,154 feet).
