Tour Details

Waqrapukara Acomayo Cusco is a newly discovered Inca fortress in Peru. It is located in the South of Cusco, precisely 61.7 kilometers (38.3 miles) away. It gets its name in Quechua after its distinct form. Waqra in Quechua means horn and Pukara mean Fortress.

The horn fortress sits in between two horn-shaped mountain peaks. It houses eight farming terraces, plazas, a ceremonial center, stairways made entirely of stones, and different Inca sites. The archaeological site sits at 4140 meters above sea level (13582 ft) above a massive ravine densely covered with forest.

We have designed the full-day Waqrapukara Trek to offer you an insight into the history. You will also get to know about the traditions of locals. They have preserved it since pre-Inca times.

Waqrapukara Peru

Waqrapukara day trip begins with a three hours drive from the city of Cusco to a remote Andean village called Wayki (Huayqui). This is the starting point of the trek. From here it is a 550 meters hike to Waqrapukara Inca ruins.

You will be hiking through different ecological zones along the course of the Apurimac River. The route offers stunning views of Apurimac Canyon. You will also get to see cave paintings that are well preserved.

At Cusco Travel Agency, we have exclusive English-speaking tour guides for the tour. As locals from the region, they have immense knowledge about the culture and history. You will not only get to enjoy the stunning beauty of the fortress but also will get an introduction to the Incas history.

Do take a moment to check our reviews on Trip Advisor.

Waqrapukara Trek is a high-altitude experience. We strongly recommend you spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness

Day 1Waqrapukara Peru - Waqrapukara Acomayo Cusco

Full day trek to Waqrapukara Peru begins with a pickup at 0400 AM from your hotel in Cusco. We will then embark on a drive to Cusipata. Here we will be serving you a typical Andean breakfast.

We will then visit the lagoon of Pomacanchi before driving to Huayqui. Pomacanchi lagoon is a serene Andean highland lake. Here you will have some time to soak in the views of the Andean peaks.

Once in Huayqui, we will be giving you a detailed briefing before starting our hike up to Waqrapukara fortress. It normally takes 3 hours to reach the fortress from Wayki (Huayqui).

Most part of the trek will be along the course of the Apurímac River. Our guide will be explaining to you about the distinct flora and fauna that you will be passing through.

Along the way, we will be stopping to see some cave paintings. These are some ancient paintings that have been preserved extremely well. We will then continue hiking to the top of the fortress.

On reaching the top, we will give you a detailed tour of the complex. We will be visiting different areas where our guide will be explaining its use during the Inca civilization. After the tour, you will have some free time to explore the citadel. Waqrapukara Acomayo Cusco is a perfect place to contemplate the Andean landscape.

Once you have had your fill of the Inca’s history, we will begin to hike back to Huayqui, the place where started from. We will stop for lunch before embarking on a drive back to Cusco City.
